Artwork Meaning
This artwork was painted especially for the gallery night as the main show piece. This artwork is different to any other artwork I have painted because it has 2 unique meanings. There is the original meaning that I had in mind when designing the artwork but then as I was painting it and after it was finished God revealed a deeper meaning.
Original Meaning:
Purple: Shows the sorry day flower. For reconciliation to happen there needs to be an acknowledgement and apology for what has happened in the past to allow people to move forward. Red: The circles represent campfires with people sitting around them The people gathered are yarning, learning from each other through sharing stories, and knowledge.
The 3 lines in between the campfires represent smoke which in aboriginal culture is used to bring about spiritual and physical cleansing and warding off bad spirits.
Yellow: The suns represent light and joy and peace and happiness that can come when true reconciliation is achieved.
Green: The branch and flowers capture the idea that reconciliation is a growing process and is not something that is achieved and then finished. It is something that continues to develop and hopefully grows deeper over time.
Blue: The colour blue along with the boomerangs capture the sorrow of our shared history and represent the loss of culture, family, kinship and identity that still impacts aboriginal people today.
The boomerang for me usually represents returning or coming home however in this artwork it represents the fact that there are some things that will be lost forever and will not find their way back.
The Spiritual Meaning:
The artwork is flipped for this meaning and reflect the “I am” statements of Jesus. For the spiritual meaning the focus of reconciliation changes and the focus becomes about reconciliation between us (creation) and God (creator) which can only come through who Jesus is and what he has done for us.
Blue: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) This section reminds us that in and through Jesus we can be in relationship with God and have eternity with him. It is a reminder of the hope, purpose and eternity. John 3:16 flows through this section- “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”
Green: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5). Remaining in Jesus brings growth and identity so we can bear fruit and flower into the people he has made us to be. When we are connected to the vine we draw our strength from God, when we are cut off from God we fail to thrive.
Yellow: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12). Jesus lights up the path so we can see clearly. When all we can see if darkness in the world Jesus brings light and hope.
Red: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die. (John 11:25). the red represents the blood of Jesus as well as fire that refines us as we grow in Him. Through Jesus’ sacrifice we can be reconciled to the Father and our sins are forgiven.
Purple: “Who do you say I am?” (Mark 8:29) In the light of the previous “I am” statements and knowing more about who Jesus is, we are called to respond to Jesus question to his disciples “Who do you say I am?“ The purple represents royalty. Jesus is the Son of God, He is the King of Kings, He is the Messiah. Who do you say He is?
