Artwork Meaning:
This artwork attempts to capture the essence of marriage and doing life alongside the one you love. This artwork is call Covenant Corroboree to represent the dance and celebration of marriage. The word covenant was chosen to acknowledge the promise between God and us and also the promise made between Husband and Wife. A Corroboree is an Australian Aboriginal dance ceremony which may take the form of a sacred ritual.
The two Platypuses are swimming in a circular direction and the water around them is also circular. This circular image represents a wedding band an unbroken connection that goes on for eternity. The platypuses swimming together also represents the fact that it takes commitment to do life alongside someone else. The design is also trying to capture movement like they are dancing together, this is a link to your first dance as a couple but also to reflect the joy and fun that comes with being married.
When I was thinking about the design for inside each platypus the three strongest elements I could think of were Faith, Hope and Love. These three elements are essential to a strong and happy marriage. These elements are seen in 1 Corinthians 13:13 “Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.”
The symbol representing faith looks like a compass. This is done to capture the idea that faith is what guides us through life. The line in the middle of the symbol represents the journey we are on. This symbol has been placed in the tail of the platypus because it is the tail that propels the platypus forward and helps it change direction.
The symbol representing Hope is in the centre. The circles represent God, Jesus and Holy Spirit. The half circles on the outside represent people gathering around and the squiggly lines are the paths taken to come to the centre circles. The symbol as a whole looks like a sun and this is to show that hope radiates out to those around it. This symbol has been placed in the centre of the platypus because hope is something that is held in our hearts.
The symbol representing Love is on the head. The centre dot represents God -who is love. The narrow pathway lines coming out from the centre dot shows God’s love going out. The dots on the outside of the circle represent Gods people receiving his love. It is from God’s love for us that we are able to love others/ our spouse. The Symbol is placed on the head of the Platypus because the head is the driver for our thoughts, actions and responses. If you are driven by love in your marriage we will seek the best for the other.
The white water in the centre of the artwork represents God and the platypuses are swimming around Him. For my wife and I, our marriage is stronger with God at the centre. There will be times when it gets difficult but for us it has been God who has pulled us through, helped us to forgive and given us hope for the future.
